Protect Your Trees from Winter Damage

During winter we see extreme weather play out. From severe snow falling, to heavy rain, and high winds, winter comes and takes a toll on everything, even our trees. During this harsh weather, our trees are phased with exposure to the different climate changes, however there are many things that we can do to protect our trees during winter, whether you believe it or not. Sadly, we can control the climate during winter, but we can definitely take control of our trees well-being. If you want to learn how to protect your trees from winter, read on!

One of the major problems that we during the winter season is commonly known as cold stress. Cold stresses take a number of forms, first affecting mature trees. Cold stresses are when temperature varies in day and night, causing the trees outer bark to crack and the inner wood too. If we are being honest, there is not much that can be done to prevent this particular case. However, you might want to consider wrapping the bark.

Early frost on late growths is also a common problem our trees encounter during winter season. To avoid this issue, put off pruning your trees until after fall. If you prune a tree to quickly or too early, it encourages new growth and frost damage is bound to occur. We also must make mention how you should pause using fertilizers with high levels of Nitrogen.

Another way to protect your trees during winter is to reinforce your trees’ branches since branches are more vulnerable to breakage during this season. If you are experiencing problems with rodents during the winter, protect your trees by leaving a space between mulch and the trunk of your trees and check every so often.

Do all of this and your trees will be just fine during winter.
